Across 55 used Toyota RAV4s we inspected, this model scores noticeably better than the typical used car we inspect — average condition 74/100 vs 61 for all cars we check. Every number on this page comes from real pre-purchase inspections — cars people were about to buy and paid an independent inspector to go through point by point, engine to underbody, paint depth to error codes. Not owner surveys, not warranty statistics, not forum lore: what we actually found.

The bottom line

You can find a solid RAV4, but only if you ignore the paint and go straight to the engine and suspension. Oil leaks show up on 40 percent of them, so look for seepage and treat a wet motor as a discount or walk away. Cracked or torn bushings are the other frequent hit; inspect them before you talk money. Then scan for active codes and check the tires and TPMS. Those four items decide the deal more than how shiny it looks. If the seller will not budge on a leaky, clunky example, walk.
